Little Mouse

Little mouse lying
still on the warm sidewalk –
you seem to be asleep.

So still my dogs don’t
even notice you; they walk
past without a look.

Stopping to inspect,
I see your slow, shallow breaths –
did you just wake up?

I fear you’ve eaten
rat poison. I pick you up
To find a better place.

You don’t resist but
that time may be over. You
curl into my hand.

Downy-soft tan fur,
tiny paws, a long thin tail –
so still and quiet.

Laying you beneath
green plants, I return you to
nature’s warm embrace
