Just Outside

Standard

My apartment sits
in front of a wooded hill –
nature just outside.

Leaves and branches are
just beyond my balcony –
close enough to touch.

Three layers of
fencing “protect” us from
the random wildlife.

A squirrel sits on
the short rail, chewing pine cones,
a giant mess below.

Further down that rail
a hawk sits; waiting, watching
for its evening meal.

Inside, one can hear
nearby coyotes’ yips, howls –
then the dogs join in.

Owls hoot at dusk,
wakened by the bright gold moon –
I snuggle in bed.

Despite living in
the urban sprawl of LA,
nature stays quite close.
