SEC 20 Shelf 2

Standard

Some women want gems,
brand name shoes, fancy purses –
I couldn’t care less.

I prefer something
much more difficult to find.
[Oh, my poor husband…]

Somehow he gets me –
he knows a foundry mold gear
makes a unique gift.

Wooden foundry mold gear from Carthage Foundry (Carthage, MO).

Look at that beauty! Wooden foundry mold gear from Carthage Foundry (Carthage, MO).

The wood painted black,
fourteen teeth, some slightly chipped –
it’s quite beautiful!

This gear is from late
1800s Missouri –
still in such great shape!

SEC 20,
SHELF 2 etched into the front
near the center hub.

The spoke-like center
sticks out an inch on the front,
paint scratched on the back.

Also visible
are lines that stretch to each tooth,
measuring angles.

Thick cast iron gears
were made based on this design –
are they still out there?

I’d much rather have
a piece with some history –
such a lovely gift!
