Currently Reading: The Talisman (and more!)

Standard

Alright, I know – not even a week into the year and I’m already straying from my initial intention of reading books in the order of the Popsugar 2015 Reading Challenge. But hey, you only live once and life’s too short to stress over reading books in a certain order for arbitrary reasons.

So I’m reading two books concurrently. The first is The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. I’m currently on page 452 (of 923). I often avoid “fantasy” novels because I think it’s going to be all dragons and sorcery. Which is weird, I guess, because I love watching movies and TV shows about dragons and sorcery. I’m a paradox. But anyway, this is supposedly a fantasy book and I really enjoy it! It doesn’t feel very different than a lot of other Stephen King books that I’ve read – this makes me wonder if Peter Straub is another one of King’s pen names, like Richard Bachman. [It’s not, Straub is a real person.] I haven’t read a physical copy of a book in a while so I’m definitely flexing all my hand muscles with this beast!

I’m also reading You Can Be Happy No Matter What: Five Principles for Keeping Life in Perspective by Richard Carlson. I had started this in 2013 but never finished it. I’m now going back to the beginning and reading it all again. I don’t read a lot of self-help books but I like some of the principles in this one. It tends to be a bit repetitive (even though it’s less than 150 pages) and the author hasn’t fully explained how to put all the principles to use but so far it seems to make sense. I tend to stress out over things for years after the fact so it’s helpful for me to find ways of keeping it all in perspective. I should finish this one in the next day or two so I’ll post a review shortly. I guess I’ll count YCBHNMW as the final book type in the Popsugar challenge: “a book you started but never finished.”

What are you reading right now?
