Yesterday I received my Reading Rainbow rewards from last year’s Kickstarter campaign! I would have donated even without the rewards but now I have a cool RR mug and some bookmarks.
Reading Rainbow had a huge influence on my love of reading. As an only child, I didn’t have a ton of other options to keep me entertained when I was on my own (Hungry Hungry Hippos by yourself isn’t as fun, though I made the attempt). Reading Rainbow encouraged the idea that reading was fun and cool. I didn’t know him outside Reading Rainbow at the time but LeVar Burton was [is] cool so reading must be cool by association.
Illiteracy is a huge issue and one that we can work together to solve. Others don’t have to love reading but it’s a skill that everyone should have. According to the RR Kickstarter page, “children who can’t read at grade level by the 4th grade are 400% more likely to drop out of high school.” That just perpetuates a horrible cycle! By donating to the Reading Rainbow campaign I can only hope that another generation of kids can both learn to read well and – hopefully – come to love reading as much as I do!
