Monday Motivation (#6)

Standard

Today for Monday Motivation, I’m going to highlight quotes on literacy and why it’s so important. With all the media around us these days it’s very easy to not bother reading. Reading requires a bit of skill and an imagination; you have to think a bit because not everything is handed to you. (Don’t get me wrong, I also watch movies and TV and play video games – but everything in moderation.)

“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.”
~ Mark Twain

“People don’t realize how a man’s whole life can be changed by one book.”
~ Malcolm X

“There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.” ~ Frank Serafini

“Comics are a gateway drug to literacy.” ~ Art Spiegelman

“Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.” ~ Kofi Annan

“You may have tangible wealth untold; caskets of jewels and coffers of gold. Richer than I you can never be. I had a mother who read to me.” ~ Strickland Gillian

“To encourage literature and the arts is a duty which every good citizen owes to his country.” ~ George Washington

“No skill is more crucial to the future of a child than literacy.” ~ Los Angeles Times

I wanted to use Monday Motivation this week to highlight the importance of literacy because this Saturday, January 24, is National Readathon Day. Proceeds raised go to the National Book Foundation to fund literacy programs. If you’d like to donate, I made a fundraiser page for Book Reviews & Haikus or you can create your own here.
