Today’s word is very late due to my delayed return home last night. I spent Monday night in Orange County for work. Then Tuesday morning, there was a train collision in Oxnard (north of Los Angeles) that rerouted huge numbers of people. My train back to LA was sold out some 12 hours later due to the incident [it’s never sold out]. Luckily one of my coworkers was able to drive me back to LA.
Anyway, today’s word is…
A commotion or fuss, especially one caused by conflicting views [as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary]
What does the word have to do with the train accident? Nothing, really. I’m sure the collision did cause a kerfuffle but that’s not why I’m featuring it. I heard the word on a Radiolab podcast during the commute back to LA with my coworker. They used the word twice and it made me smile both times. It just sounds like a silly word, something made up by Dr. Seuss perhaps, and the fact that it’s rarely used makes it even more special.
