Monday Motivation (#28)

Since it’s the beginning of the week, it’s time once again for Monday Motivation, a regular post where I include quotes–from authors, books, wherever–to help get your week off to a great start. The theme I chose for today is breaking out of your routine and these quotes could relate to things you are writing, reading, or life in general (if you feel like you’re stuck in a rut).

“My mind rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram, or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation.” ~ Arthur Conan Doyle

“You have to be displaced from what’s comfortable and routine, and then you get to see things with fresh eyes, with new eyes.” ~ Amy Tan

“There are ways to stimulate being prolific, and part of that is making pilgrimages, and being open to listening, changing up the routine.” ~ Tori Amos

“Routine is not organization, any more than paralysis is order.” ~ Arthur Helps

“If you’re waiting for the perfect moment, you’ll never write a thing because it will never arrive. I have no routine. I have no foolproof anything. There’s nothing foolproof.” ~ Margaret Atwood

And here’s a bonus quote from Tori Amos because I thought it was so perfect:

“Take a different route to the coffee shop to see what you can see and hear. When we get in a routine, we can become zombie-like and shut down. It’s about discipline. You have to push yourself.” ~ Tori Amos

[Side note: I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a Tori Amos song in my life. Now I think that maybe I should.]

While it’s good to have a routine for some things that you should do regularly–brushing your teeth, taking your kids to school at a certain time [I assume], feeding your pets–it’s easy to get stuck in a rut if you follow a routine in all parts of your life. Switch things up where you can: take a different route to work/school, eat in a restaurant by yourself, or take up a new hobby. It might just show you some piece of the world you’d never noticed and give you some new creative ideas!

I hope your week is off to a great start–happy Monday!
